Michael Mulcahy - Irish (1952)

Michael Mulcahy was born in Cork. After studying at Crawford College of art, he continued his studies at the National College of Art in Dublin.  From 1973 to 1975 he lived and worked in north-west Africa and toured Gambia, Maritania, Morocco, Senegal and Western Sahara.  For the following three years he worked as a street performer in Dublin and Dusseldorf and then spent from 1984 to 1992 travelling through Australia, India, Mali, Papua New Guinea and South Korea.

Mulcahy’s  solo and group shows have travelled worldwide.  His 1989 exhibition at the Douglas Hyde Gallery was accompanied by a catalogue with an essay by Aidan Dunne.  A major exhibition of his work was shown at the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in 1994 and he also had a solo show at Butler Gallery, Kilkenny in 1995.  His work can be found in the collections of the Australian National Gallery, Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Ulster Museum.  He is a member of Aosdana and is represented by Taylor Galleries, Dublin.
