Markey Robinson - Irish (1917-1999)

Born in Belfast, Markey Robinson studied at the College of Art for a short time.  However, he learned much of his use of colour from his grandfather, who was a painter and decorator.  As a merchant seaman he travelled to Canada and south Africa and on his return to Belfast he exhibited in many venues. He also showed in London and Dublin in the 1940’s,50’s and 60’s.

After a working trip to Spain in 1969 he returned to Belfast to find that his studio had been destroyed by fire. He returned to Spain for about a year and then settled in Dublin.

During the 70’s he exhibited in Belfast, Dublin and Sligo.  His work also appeared in Paris, London and Cardiff.

A retrospective exhibition in the George Gallery in Dublin in 1988 contained 100 works.  He died suddenly in Belfast in January 1999.
